The partners want to develop an integrated thermal management system for battery-powered electric vehicles. They are relying on the natural refrigerant propane.

Vitesco Technologies and Sanden International (Europe) are working together on an integrated thermal management system for battery electric vehicles (BEV). In this pre-development project, Sanden is developing the compact refrigeration unit with the natural refrigerant propane (R290), while Vitesco Technologies is contributing the associated thermal energy distribution in the form of a water/glycol-based distribution unit. This consists of coolant pumps, valves and sensors. Depending on the application, the distribution unit can therefore have between 5 and 13 connections for heat supply or dissipation.

The integration of the complete thermal management system and its components in an indirect system should offer various advantages such as easier adaptation, reduced complexity, simplified vehicle assembly and cost benefits for the OEM. In addition, legal regulations, such as the upcoming ban on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Europe, should be easy to comply with. The new system should also increase the range at low temperatures.
